Although Apple’s recently released update trimmed the fat, removing some of the bloat in an attempt to make iTunes more attractive, it’s still a bit lackluster in comparison to other programs available. Today it’s more like an overly bloated piece of software that lacks a few quality of life features found standard in most of the newer applications. ![]() It is no longer the ground-breaking software that it was during its tenured honeymoon phase. However, fast forward to present day and iTunes is no longer carrying the Music Management Championship Belt, so to speak. If you weren’t using iTunes, you weren’t keeping up with the times (sorry Zune). The whole music management game was turned upside down and brokered in a new era for your digital music collection. So if you’re one of those who are still using iTunes but are looking for something a bit more feature-packed, this article has got a few different choices for you.ĭuring its original release, iTunes was a game changer. Thankfully, those days are long gone and Mac OS users can rejoice (and have) in the fact that there is now, such a large selection from which to choose. (Select your device and in the Summary pane, click ‘Back Up Now’ to back it up.In the beginning, there was iTunes. iTunes should remain on your Mac for making periodic local back-ups of devices - especially before iOS upgrades. This is the main reason why although we’re happy to recommend alternative software to help minimise iTunes usage, we won’t suggest getting rid of the app entirely. Note that anything you disable won’t be recoverable if you need to restore a device, though. ![]() In Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, you can check device back-up sizes against your iCloud storage plan, and for the current device optionally turn off certain components if necessary (such as Camera Roll). In a more general sense regarding back-ups, iOS devices can optionally be backed up to iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Backup), with the caveat that you must have enough free space. (The app also provides tools for clearing photos and messages.) The app scans your device, and enables you to order apps by size you then click checkboxes and a ‘Remove’ button to get rid of a number of them in one go. With iTunes, you can deselect several apps and get rid of them in one go.
