What is your favorite local shop in Madison?Īgain with the favorites - it's too hard to choose just one! Well, I love Badger Welding Supplies they're so helpful and nice there. I work 40 hours a week at my day job, and I usually spend about 60 hours a week in my studio. The separation between my store and my personal life is a fine line. I think many people underestimate the time commitment involved in an online store and don't figure in the time they need to spend taking photos, writing descriptions, answering emails, etc. Oh wow, do you have a few hours? My one best piece of advice is to spend time researching how to take great photos of your items - it's essential. What advice do you have for people interested in starting an online store? How do you make the separation between your store and your day job/personal life? It's a good representation of how someone once described my style - "antique in composition, but modern in design subtle in coloring, but strong in intensity." I love that the surrounding shape is square, making it feel even more unusual. Bowe has textured the copper, hand-sawn the design and completed the pendant with a lovely old-world patina. I struggled to create smooth lines and no amount of filing and polishing, and filing and polishing again, could make my pendant look like anything more than child's play. But like many teenage expectations, mine failed to live up to the dream I had created in my mind. My 16-year-old self had this fantasy of discovering an inner bohemian with a raw talent for creating gorgeous pieces of jewelry that everyone would just die to wear. Thankfully, the spirit and identities of many of these groups remain intact, particularly through artistic traditions. There are countless historical examples of Native cultures and populations being stripped away through colonization efforts right here in North America. This 1-star review and rating refer ONLY TO THE PRICING POLICY, which is (perhaps deliberately?) confusing.Īs with so many apps these days, there are multiple pricing options depending on where you acquire the product (e.g., Mac App Store, or download) and whether you make any of those deceptive, poorly documented "in-app" purchases. If you just want them out of your way, stash them in a faraway folder. If you do want the copies off your Mac, delete them for good. Gemini moves duplicates to the Trash and lets you bring them back in a click. Never worry about losing the wrong file by mistake. Nothing's deleted for good - until you say so.Because that's what a good duplicate finder does: makes things simpler. Whatever you need to do - view duplicates in detail or quickly destroy them - it takes a few clicks. Gemini's carefully crafted to be super simple. It's like an apprentice you are training. Gemini's algorithm remembers what you delete and what you choose to keep. But the best thing is that it learns to select duplicates the way you do. Delete duplicates in iTunes: Gemini scans it to find those five copies of "Space Oddity" you've stored up. Even if you play the same tune on repeat, one copy is enough. Don't let copies invade your Photos: find duplicate pictures, look at them closely, and zap the extras. Do you really need 10 retakes of the Golden Gate? Probably not. In the beginning, Donald Trump’s candidacy was treated as an outlandish publicity stunt, as though he wasn’t a serious candidate and should be treated as a circus act. As with grief, there were several stages. No one in modern times had seen anything like it. This was a whole new approach to politics. But I was still shocked at what happened. I knew all of this about the media mindset going into the 2016 presidential campaign. He will also give sympathetic coverage to groups like Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. In the same vein, and for the same reason, the average reporter will support every conceivable regulation as a way to equalize conditions for the poor. Somebody has to pay for that government intervention the media loves to demand. The rest of that journalistic ethos-“afflict the comfortable”-leads to the knee-jerk support of endless taxation. Or, as liberals like to say, “Government is what we do together.” From there, it’s a short drive to the conclusion that every problem has a government solution. Translate the first part of that compassionate-sounding idea into the daily decisions about what makes news, and it is easy to fall into the habit of thinking that every person afflicted by something is entitled to help. That’s because liberalism is baked into the journalism cake.ĭuring the years I spent teaching at the Columbia University School of Journalism, I often found myself telling my students that the job of the reporter was “to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” I’m not even sure where I first heard that line, but it still captures the way most journalists think about what they do. Of course, most of them only wanted to bring down a Republican president. Ever since, young people became journalists because they wanted to be the next Woodward and Bernstein, find a Deep Throat, and bring down a president. Think Robert Redford in All the President’s Men. The deal was sealed with Watergate, when journalism was viewed as more trusted than government-and far more exciting and glamorous. Fueled by the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, the media jumped on the anti-authority bandwagon writ large. For most of the media, bias grew out of the social revolution of the 1960s and ’70s. I grew up at The New York Times, so I’m familiar with the species. It’s not exactly breaking news that most journalists lean left. Among the many firsts, last year’s election gave us the gobsmacking revelation that most of the mainstream media puts both thumbs on the scale-that most of what you read, watch, and listen to is distorted by intentional bias and hostility. For that, we can blame the 2016 election or, more accurately, how some news organizations chose to cover it. We were generally seen as trying to report the news in a fair and straightforward manner. There was a time not so long ago when journalists were trusted and admired. Long enough to know that it wasn’t always like this. “Don’t know” and “other” responses not included. The following is adapted from a speech delivered on April 20, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia, at a Hillsdale College National Leadership Seminar. As temperatures rise, more precipitation falls as rain and less as snow, and the snowpack melts more quickly in the late spring and early summer. “Snow drought” also plays a key role in California, 30% of whose water supply originates from the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This prediction was borne out in a 2021 study published in Geophysical Research Letters, with researchers finding that “the precipitation season has become shorter and sharper in California” since the 1960s. Dwindling soil moisture is known as “agricultural drought,” and is exacerbated by the increased evaporation and transfer of moisture from land to the atmosphere that comes about in a warming climate.Ī lack of rain and snow is called “meteorological drought.” A 2018 study in Nature Climate Change used climate models to predict that California’s precipitation patterns will shift in a hotter world, with more rain falling in the winter but less in spring and fall months, lengthening the state’s dry season. There are several different kinds of drought, all worsened by human activity. The drought conditions led Utah Governor Spencer Cox recently to urge the state’s residents of all faiths to hold a “weekend of prayer” for rain. is currently experiencing drought conditions, including the entire states of Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. It’s not just California 96% of the western U.S. Changing climate is supercharging southwestern droughtsĪccording to the 2020 study in Science cited earlier, human-caused climate change made southwestern drought conditions between 20 about 46% more intense than they would have been naturally, “pushing an otherwise moderate drought onto a trajectory comparable to the worst megadroughts since 800 CE,” the heyday of the Mayan civilization. Given the lack of water in 2021, some farmers have been forced to resort to tearing out valuable almond trees and instead planting less thirsty crops.Ībout 80% of the state’s developed water use goes to the agriculture industry, so anyone who enjoys eating fruits and nuts should be concerned that climate change is increasing the odds of megadroughts permanently drying California. But nut trees are water-intensive (though notably less so than the alfalfa and pastureland grown for animal agriculture), and unlike seasonal crops, they cannot be fallowed in a dry year. About 80% of all almonds in the world are grown in California: The state’s almonds alone generate $6 billion annually. California produces nearly all of the almonds, artichokes, avocados, broccoli, carrots, celery, kiwi, figs, garlic, grapes, raisins, raspberries, strawberries, honeydew melons, nectarines, olives, pistachios, plums, tangerines, mandarins, and walnuts grown in the U.S. The state’s agricultural industry generates $50 billion each year, which is more than the entire gross domestic products of Vermont and Wyoming, and as large as the economy of Alaska or Montana. California is effectively America’s garden – it produces two-thirds of all fruits and nuts grown in the U.S. The consequences of drought in California are felt well outside the state’s borders. The features could make it a popular solution for Internet users. Wormhole does not require an account at the time of writing, has a large file size limit, and supports local area network sharing. The service's key management and other security features are outlined on the page as well.įirefox Send did support a number of features and options that Wormhole does not support at the time of writing, including password protection of files, download limits, or different storage limits. Besides end-to-end encryption, Wormhole promises that it does not display advertisement or will load trackers. The Wormhole security page reveals information about the implemented security techniques. The encrypted files are stored for 24 hours in the cloud before they are deleted automatically. One interesting option that Wormhole supports is the direct sharing via WiFi or Bluetooth these may offer faster transfer speeds as local networks are utilized when possible. Recipients may download all files or only select files. You may copy the link to share it with others, or use the share option to use sharing options provided by the operating system. Wormhole calls this "instant file streaming", and recipients may start downloading files even before the upload completes. You get options to copy the link to the cloud copy of the files and a share link right away, even before the actual upload has started this is one distinguishing factor as most file sharing services display share links and options only after a successful transfer. Wormhole works in all modern web browsers. To use it, visit the Wormhole website and either use drag & drop to add files to the send queue or use the file/folder browser instead. The service uses end-to-end encryption, and that means that the owners of Wormhole as well as the Internet Service Provider or network listeners, don't know the content of the files that are shared using the service. First, the basics: Wormhole can be used by anyone to send files with a total size of up to 10 Gigabytes. Although Apple’s recently released update trimmed the fat, removing some of the bloat in an attempt to make iTunes more attractive, it’s still a bit lackluster in comparison to other programs available. Today it’s more like an overly bloated piece of software that lacks a few quality of life features found standard in most of the newer applications. It is no longer the ground-breaking software that it was during its tenured honeymoon phase. However, fast forward to present day and iTunes is no longer carrying the Music Management Championship Belt, so to speak. If you weren’t using iTunes, you weren’t keeping up with the times (sorry Zune). The whole music management game was turned upside down and brokered in a new era for your digital music collection. So if you’re one of those who are still using iTunes but are looking for something a bit more feature-packed, this article has got a few different choices for you.ĭuring its original release, iTunes was a game changer. Thankfully, those days are long gone and Mac OS users can rejoice (and have) in the fact that there is now, such a large selection from which to choose. Finding a suitable replacement was nigh impossible. At one point in time, it was the only media player Mac OS users had available to them. (Select your device and in the Summary pane, click ‘Back Up Now’ to back it up.In the beginning, there was iTunes. iTunes should remain on your Mac for making periodic local back-ups of devices - especially before iOS upgrades. This is the main reason why although we’re happy to recommend alternative software to help minimise iTunes usage, we won’t suggest getting rid of the app entirely. Note that anything you disable won’t be recoverable if you need to restore a device, though. In Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, you can check device back-up sizes against your iCloud storage plan, and for the current device optionally turn off certain components if necessary (such as Camera Roll). In a more general sense regarding back-ups, iOS devices can optionally be backed up to iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Backup), with the caveat that you must have enough free space. (The app also provides tools for clearing photos and messages.) The app scans your device, and enables you to order apps by size you then click checkboxes and a ‘Remove’ button to get rid of a number of them in one go. With iTunes, you can deselect several apps and get rid of them in one go. Deleting even a single app can take time on iOS, since devices have a tendency to lock up while you wait for a ‘delete’ dialog box. One area in which iTunes can come in handy is for bulk-deletion. To then install on another device, just open the App Store, ensure you’re signed into the same iTunes account, and head to the Purchased tab (found inside Updates on iPhone). Doing so is unnecessary, though you can easily download new apps directly on a device. ITunes can be used for downloading apps and syncing them to a device, and also for rearranging your Home screens. How to get back missing music, films and TV shows that have disappeared from iTunes Alternatives to iTunes for managing apps and backing up And then, of course, there are countless streaming services for telly and video that you can install on your devices that don’t need iTunes, such as Netflix, NOW TV, and BBC iPlayer. The caveat: these apps don’t work with videos that have DRM (such as iTunes Store purchases). This means you don’t even have to sync anything - you can just watch your videos whenever you have connectivity. We also rather likeĪir Video HD, which work with a free Mac- or PC-based server app to access video files, and encode them on the fly for your device. The aforementioned WALTR will happily convert video and fire it at the native iOS Videos app. If you’ve largely just used iTunes to store and sync iOS-compatible videos, there are plenty of alternatives. For video, if you’re totally into iTunes Store purchases and use your Mac to play them back, you should probably stick with iTunes anyway. |
